THANK YOU AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS

From myself and the Board of Trustees of The New Curtain Theatre company I would like to wish each and every one of you a happy holiday season and a bright and prosperous New Year for 2008. Thank you all as well for coming out to help us and listen to on the 21 and 22 of December in the reading (Our 1st Annual I hope) of Dickens - A CHRISTMAS CAROL. This I see as the birth of an annual event that will grow each and every year. This event helped us raise a decent amount to contribute toward paying off our renovation over-runs. Also the pudding sales were a hit again this year. With my move of residence (and difficulty in procuring supplies) we didn't have the time to organize the wreath making as last year.

Next year I will be organizing an even bigger Christmas festivity with ideas already starting to form. If any of you have anything in mind to consider please pass it along and who knows it may surface on the roster - remember we are a company for the people and the community.

Keep in tune for upcoming events as we just received some needed funding from the province that will enable us to keep plodding ahead with the shows.

Pass the word along to your friends and get them out to see our next show.

Cheers and Happy Holidays
Geoff

A SUMMER TO REMEMBER

After a crazy introduction and alot of stress filled days and nights New Curtain's summer series is up and running. We will be mounting 3 shows this summer with a finale children's show in a modern adaptation of A MIDSUMMER'S NIGHT DREAM.

The summer series though - entitled A SUMMER TO REMEMBER - will include an A to Z roster of shows. From a story of the effect that war can have on a family in 1926 Newfoundland to the zany goings-on of a down and out actress in New York and her search for love and creativity.

The series opener will be David French's SOLDIER'S HEART which previews on June 28th and officially opens on July 1st - the 91st anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont Hamel - July 1, 1916. Plays from June 28th to July 15th, 2007. Esau Mercer has returned home from the war with a secret. Jacob, his son wants to know it. Maybe some things are better left unsaid. This show runs from June 28th to July 15th. Venue: BALBO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, THOMAS PLACE, SHOAL HARBOUR. Starring Geoff Adams, James Hawksley and Greg White. Directed by Chuck Herriott.

IT HAD TO BE YOU is a zany comedy by Renee Taylor (of THE NANNY) and Joseph Bolgna set in New York runs from July 20 to August 11th. Want to find love and success in New York ? Hold a man hostage in your apartment on a snowy Christmas Eve and convince him to be your partner both in dramaturgy and in marriage. An evening of Hollywood fluff and fairy-tale fantasy seen through a fun-house mirror. Starring Amelia Manuel, Chuck Herriott and Geoff Adams. Directed by Chuck Herriott. Playing at THE LOFT THEATRE at White Hills.

The final show of the series will be a remount of Michael West's FOLEY (our fall production) in August 2007.
Foley is the last of his family, among the last of the protestants in the Republic of Ireland, "the endpoint of all this evolution and fruitcake". He attempts to recall his life, to work out what went wrong along the way and why he's so fond of an old pair of shoes. This will again star Artistic Director Geoff Adams and was directed by Rabbittown's Aiden Flynn.
Playing at THE LOFT THEATRE @ White Hills. Exact dates to be determined.

The summer will conclude with our Youth Acting Camp and their production - a modern adaptation of A MIDSUMMER'S NIGHT DREAM at the annual ARTS UNDER THE STARS at Elizabeth Swan Memorial Park. (free admission)

A BREAKAWAY TO THE END OF THE SEASON

We here at The New Curtain Theatre are proud to present its spring production of HOCKEY MOM-HOCKEY DAD. This is going to prove to be a very special experience in that the show, whose setting is the bleachers of a small town arena, will be actually staged on the bleachers of the CLARENVILLE STADIUM - right on the blue line. The play uses the backdrop of the bleachers at a peewee hockey club to explore the many faces of the game. Love in the stands, blood on the ice and the usual small town affair. An exploration of the boundaries of love, sport and violence that both grab and disturb. This show will be the regular season closer for the company before it goes into its summer season.
Performed from one end of this country to the other it is something that every small town sports community can relate to - the power and passion that the sport can instill. We hope that you will all come out to see this production in its very unique environment. The show stars new comers to the area - Petrina Bromley and Steve O'Connell (Petrina is a regular at Rising Tide and the Revue show. They both are looking forward to coming here to perform for the Clarenville audience and hope you will all come out to see the show. The show is directed by Artistic Director Geoff Adams. The show runs from May 9th to the 13th with a preview on the 8th. All shows are at 8 PM with a matinee on the 12th at 2:30PM. Tickets can be purchased at BARE MOUNTAIN CONVENIENCE on Memorial Drive. Call 466 7966 for more info.

FOR THE LOVE OF THEATRE - A Huge Success!

February 14th saw not only a time for lovers to rule the day but also a time for lovers who love theatre to show us how much. And the feeling was truly in the air that night when 105 people came out to the 1st annual FOR THE LOVE OF THEATRE fundraiser held at The Clarenville Inn. Hosted by the infamous SNOOK, who has special connections to Clarenville, the evening consisted of a variety of love scenes, Broadway show tunes and contemporary love songs with a five course meal. This was topped off by numerous auction items ranging from watercolour classes to a dinner boat cruise to a designer print by Ed Roche.
The evening began with a selection of readings from the Bard of Love - Shakespeare - read by the actors for the evening, Amelia Manuel, Brad Hodder and Geoff Adams accompanied by Ann Lundrigan on the musical end of things. But of course the inimitable humour of Snook tied the whole evening together from his Ode to Bet to his instructional class of love tips.
We saw lots of new faces and were treated to the company of old friends. But during the evening the biggest piece of news of the season was made known when Artistic Director Geoff Adams announced that the efforts of the town, the company and the Ski Hill Association had finally come together with the approval of our grant application for the renovation of their new home in at The White Hills. Come summer NCTC will be operating out of their new home in the Middle Chalet on a year round basis. Construction is due to commence in the next few weeks.
The true success of the evening came to be known when the total numbers were tallied and the gross takings for the evening came to just under $10 000. 00.
The New Curtain Theatre Company wishes to thank all those who helped out with the event - particularly Debbie Halleran, Silvia Rice, Daphne O'Reilly, The Clarenville Inn, Katimavik Canada and all the generous people who donated auction items for the evening. But the word on the street was that it was a hit and an event not to be missed next time around.
Already people are booking for next year so if you want to attend reserve now!!!! Remember - limited seating available!

"NEW HOME FOR THE NEW CURTAIN"

The big news for the year has finally hit the pages of our local paper. Our new home base is finally official. We have now taken over the Middle Chalet at the WHITE HILLS SKI RESORT. Clarenville now has its own alpine arts centre . . . or at least it will when the renovations are complete. No longer will we have to search for rehearsal space, performance venues or storage for our sets, costumes and props. We have it all in one building. And we can now mount shows on a regular basis . . . or . . . whenever we feel like it. For the full story link to the following page and find out about all of our upcoming projects and ventures.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Hello everyone and welcome to 2007. Now that another year has dawned we look back on the last with amazement. It is hard to believe that our company has acheived so much in so little time. From our opener BRILLIANT TRACES in April to our family Christmas production DICKENS WRITES A CHRISTMAS CAROL (Rabbittown Theatre) in December. From there to here we have acheived much. But the cherry on top is about to hit the papers when we will be announcing our newest acquistion - our own theatre!
Yes we have acquired our own facility which will become our home base. In an arrangment with the town and the Nordic and Alpine Ski Association, we are taking over the Middle Chalet in on White Hills Ski Resort. A move that will aid in that facilty becoming the year round attraction it was meant to be as well as giving us the home base we so desperately required. No more are we being shifted from pillar to post with each show we do. The next step is the renovations and upgrades to convert the space into the required facility with a lobby/gallery, box office, washroms and offices on the main floor and a 80-90 seat loft style theatre on the upper level. Our goal is to have it up and running by April for our spring show - HOCKEY MOM-HOCKEY DAD. Also stay tuned for a definite grand opening gala event not to be missed. Stay tuned for more news on that front.
For now we just wanted to thank all of you who have been so supportive of our theatre company over the past 8 months and hope that you will remain with us in the future growth we are anticipating.
